Time to Stop Using the Race Card

Earlier this week former NFL Quarterback Warren Moon suggested that NFL Prospect and potential first round draft pick Cameron Newton is being judged solely on his skin color and not his talent. Moon said this to CBS Sports:

A lot of the criticism he's receiving is unfortunate and racially based.  I thought we were all past this. I don't see other quarterbacks in the draft being criticized by the media or fans about their smile or called a phony.  He's being held to different standards from white quarterbacks. I thought we were past all this stuff about African-American quarterbacks, but I guess we're not.

The problem with Moon’s statement is that it is 100% false.  What Moon is commenting on is what ProFootballWeekly's Nolan Nawrocki had to say about Newton. Nawrocki wrote:

Very disingenuous — has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law — does not command respect from teammates and always will struggle to win a locker room.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t get a racism vibe from this statement, what I get from it is that Newton is cocky, me-first, screw-the-team type of player and that has nothing to do with his race.

Moon also implies that black quarterbacks in general don’t get a fair shake because of their color.  This, once again, is 100% false.  If a quarterback is skilled and good enough, he will make it, if not, he won’t make it, it’s that simple.  We need to stop playing the race card in this country whenever it is convenient.  The truth on this subject is simple, the reason black quarterbacks (generally) haven’t been as successful (no super bowls) is that their style of play (run first, pass second) isn’t all the contusive to the NFL, Period.

We can also apply economics to this situation, if an owner of a team thinks Cameron Newton or any other mobile quarterback is going to win and make them money, he’ll invest in that quarterback.  The reason owner are starting to shy away from mobile quarterbacks (who tend to be black) is that they simply don’t get the same results as quarterbacks such as Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Aaron Rogers.

So once again, my message to Warren Moon or anyone else who wishes to use race as an excuse or reason . . . STOP!!  The NFL and it’s owners only care about one color, green.

Warren Moon is a Hall of Fame QB who happens to Black, he should know what he's talking about. Obviously, you are not Black and do not have a clue as to what he's saying. That statement is totally racial and you know that. Some of you guy white guys hear what you want to hear. I know because I'm White however, I do understand and see rascism everyday. I assure you had Steve Young or Joe Montana had mentored Cam Newton we would be giving them praise on his performance. So let's stop playing dumb and as for as your comment about Black quarterbacks run first pass second, again another stupid statement. Rodney Peete, James Harris(Rams),Doug Williams(Superbowl Champion), the kid at Tampa Bay (Josh Freeman) and let's not forget that Steve Young, Roger Staubach were scrambling quarterbacks that won Superbowls so your comment about Black quarterbacks and owners, money is a joke.

First of all, i don't care about skin color, at all. I do care about smart people and dumb, you being one of the dumb. Second: Rodney Peete- really, I mean really, a horribly awful quarterback who didn't win a Super Bowl and James Harris was also really bad (didn't win a Super Bowl). Doug Williams did win a Super Bowl, BUT he was a pass first QB, NOT a running QB (oh, he was also a horrible QB who had one good game). Steve Young and Roger Staubach: also pass first QBs who could scramble. Josh Freeman, another pass first QB who can kinda scramble. Your comment is exactly why I wrote this post, I am sick and tired of idiots like you always playing the race card whenever possible. The NFL isn't about race, IT'S ABOUT MONEY, PERIOD!!

The underlying points of this article (evidently I have to point this out because your dumb) are:
1) Running QBs (that is run-first QBs like Newton) don't win Super Bowls
2) Cam Newton was being called a phony because . . . he is one. He cheated in college (got paid) and is a selfish player. And that has absolutely nothing to do with his skin color. I actually compare him to Ryan Leaf for that same reason
3) The Most Important Point: Stop using the race card as an excuse. If someone can play and win, they will: if not, they won't.

I also want to say that I'm rooting for Newton. I want to like him and I love to watch him play because he is one hell of a talent and is really fun to watch. But, he won't win a Super Bowl and for that matter, Tim Tebow (a truly great athlete and human being and happens to be one of my favorite athletes) won't either for the same reason: he's a run first QB and they DO NOT WIN SUPER BOWLS, period.
